FAQs

What type of vehicles do you accept?
We accept all vehicles, along with motorcycles, RV's, campers and boats on trailers.

Does my car have to be running to donate?
No.  Goodwill can send a tow truck to your location in Lee, Collier, or Charlotte Counties.

What paperwork do I need to donate my car?
We will need a copy of your vehicle’s title.

Do you provide a free home pickup service?
Yes, Monday through Friday within the Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties.

How long will it take to get my vehicle picked up?
Goodwill can pick your vehicle up from Monday-Friday in Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties.
In most cases, we will be able to pick your car up within 24 hours.

Where is your car lot?
Our Auto Sales and Donation Center is located in Fort Myers, at 3333 Fowler Street.

Why should I donate a vehicle to Goodwill?
There are many reasons to donate, including safety, convenience, a tax deduction, and the
knowledge that your donation will help people with disabilities and other disadvantages
overcome their barriers to employment or independence.

What percentage of the proceeds from the sale of my vehicle will go to Goodwill programs?
After paying a flat fee for towing and title work, we receive 100 percent of the resale of every donated vehicle.
This money is used to fund our programs and services.

How will my vehicle be used?
Most of the vehicles which are donated to Goodwill are re-sold at our Auto Sales and Donation Center
Other vehicles (which must meet certain requirements) are entered into our Four Wheels for Work program,
which helps people who are struggling with transportation needs.

How can I be sure that I'm donating my car to a legitimate charity?
Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
Upon request, we can provide you with our federal identification number.  We are a United Way partner,
and a member organization of Goodwill Industries International, the nation’s largest non-profit provider
of employment services to people with disabilities and other disadvantages.

What do I do after I donate?
You will receive a donation receipt once you sign the vehicle title over to Goodwill.  Please take a copy
of the donation receipt, your license plates, and vehicle registration to the Department of Motor Vehicles
to de-register the car as soon as possible. Once the vehicle is de-registered, contact your insurance company
to cancel coverage (they also may want a copy of the donation receipt). (Note: If applicable, Government
regulations require owners to remove all military installation decals and other special access decals
before a car is sold, traded or donated.)

How much is my vehicle worth as an itemized tax deduction?
According to IRS Guidelines, you are entitled to deduct the greater of $500 or the resale price of your donation.
Goodwill will provide you with documentation once your vehicle has been re-sold.
If your vehicle is not re-sold, but instead entered into our Four Wheels For Work program, you may be able to
deduct the Blue Book value of your vehicle.
You should take several photographs of the vehicle before donating to document the car's condition.
We will also have you sign an odometer Disclosure Statement that can help verify the vehicle's condition.
Keep the photographs, your Goodwill donation receipt and your vehicle's maintenance records for several years following the donation.
We will also provide you with an IRS Form 8283 -- required for all material donations with a value in excess of $500 --
which must be attached to your tax return (See Tax Advantage for more information).

What happens if the new owner doesn't legally register it and I start receiving tickets or notices from the police or DMV?
More than 50,000 vehicles were donated to nonprofit organizations last year and resold. Luckily, such stories are few and far between.
That's why it's so important after you donate a car to take the license tags, registration and a copy of your donation receipt to the DMV to
de-register the vehicle.
In the unlikely occurrence that this were to happen, we will send you a letter to take to the DMV that states you donated your
vehicle to Goodwill, along with a copy of the Bill of Sale that lists the new owner's name and address.
This will prove that you are no longer the legal owner and absolve you from any further action.
